Malaysian Education Comes With Values Attached - Official
DUBAI, Nov 16 (Bernama) -- The motto, 'World-class Degrees. Truly Asian Values', being touted by Malaysia's Higher Education Ministry encapsulates what the country has to offer to prospective foreign students, according to a ministry official.
Its education marketing division director, Dr Syed Alwee Alsagoff, said they were no mere words as Malaysia was one of 13 signatory countries worldwide to have an international cross-recognition agreement for professional degrees under the 'Washington Accord'.
"With Malaysia being in the Washington Accord, people don't have to question anymore about the quality of our degrees, because we're internationally vetted," he told Bernama during a recent education fair here participated by 15 Malaysian universities under the umbrella of the ministry.
According to Dr Syed Alwee, among the 13 countries, Malaysia by far, offered the most competitively-priced quality education for international students.
"But I don't want to talk about price too much because we'd rather talk about the values and unique learning environment that we have to offer," he said.
The official said those who opted to study in Malaysia would find, among others, heartwarming hospitality, serenity and security during their stay in the Southeast Asian nation of 27 million.
The ministry reckoned that people from over 100 countries who had studied in Malaysia were now working in all parts of the world as top professionals, industry captains, senior academics and even ministers.
And the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (Unesco) has recognised Malaysia as an upcoming favourite of international university education among students.
Dr Syed Alwee said the challenge for Malaysian education purveyors in the Middle East was growing competition from other countries, including those which had opened up branch campuses in the region.
He said: "Places like Dubai and Bahrain have opened their doors to foreign universities. So, we'd need to intensify our efforts and focus on our strengths.
"We can't trumpet cheap education because people in this region don't seem to mind too much about that. So, we really need to re-look at our marketing (strategies) and beat them (other foreign universities) at the game."
The Malaysian pavilion was abuzz with activity during the Dubai fair, with students, as well as parents, visiting the booth strategically located in one of the halls of the Dubai International Convention and Exhibition Centre.
Dubai-based Malaysia Education Promotion Centre (MEPC) regional director for Middle East and North Africa, Shushilil Azam Shuib, said the Malaysian pavilion was arranged according to subject clusters, rather than little corners for participating universities.
Among them were architecture, engineering, Islamic studies, business, finance, information communication technology and other popular fields.
Shushilil Azam said university representatives present had to be well-versed in the study fields on offer at their own institutions, channelling prospective students to other universities, if needed.
"It works like a fishing net in that we're able to attract as many students as possible, to study at our universities," he explained.
He said the ministry had been bold in undertaking the endeavour which saw a large number of Malaysian universities under one roof during a roadshow overseas.
Besides Dubai, the Malaysian education team also went to Bahrain and Jordan.
Malaysian Ambassador to the United Arab Emirates (UAE) Datuk Yahaya Abdul Jabar lauded ongoing efforts by the ministry to woo Middle Eastern students to Malaysia.
This, he said, was in line with plans to turn Malaysia into a regional education hub.
MEPC Dubai is targeting to have 25,000 students from the Middle East by the end of this year

Envoy Engages Malaysian Business Community In UAE
DUBAI, Nov 16 (Bernama) -- Malaysian ambassador to the United Arab Emirates (UAE) Datuk Yahaya Abdul Jabar has pledged to bring up issues faced by the Malaysian business community in this Gulf state with the Malaysian government.
He conveyed this during a dialogue session with representatives of Malaysian companies and professionals organised by the Malaysia External Trade Development Corporation (Matrade) here recently.
"We'll definitely take up those issues and concerns with the government and, from there, we'll see whether our leadership can help resolve some of their problems," the envoy said.Among the issues raised during the session moderated by Matrade's senior trade commissioner based in Dubai, Dzulkifli Mahmud, were late payments by clients and how Malaysian financial institutions could assist some of the Malaysian firms operating in the UAE.
Yahaya said the government should look at the possibility of a capital increase for Malaysia's Exim Bank to enable it to carry out its role more effectively.
"I've personally found the discussions very frank and lively. The session has helped us to better understand some of the issues and problems faced by our business community," he said.
One of the participants, Eversendai Corporation's group managing director Datuk A.K. Nathan, said Malaysian firms should pick the right jobs and partners.

Dubai Police save baby from being sold
Dubai: A housemaid has been arrested for selling a nearly two-month-old infant for Dh10,000 to a police officer disguised in an undercover operation.
An Indonesian housemaid who ran away from her sponsor, an Emirati family in the northern emirates, offered to help a Filipina housemaid who had also ran away from her sponsor.
The Indonesian suspect confessed to the police that she sold the Filipina's baby without his mother's knowledge.
The Filipina just wanted to get rid of the baby by offering him for adoption to any of the Emirati families, said Lieutenant Colonel Abdul Rahim Bin Shafi, director of the anti-organised crimes department at Dubai Police, who referred the case to the combating human trafficking department.
According to him, the mother left the sponsor to work as a part time domestic helper for a European family. During this time, the Filipina worker, identified as N.B.M, had an illicit affair with a Filipino, who shortly left the country after her pregnancy.
The Filipina gave birth to the baby at home, leaving him with no legal or official documents. After nearly two months, she decided she wanted to leave the country, seeking the assistance of the Indonesian maid, identified as H.N.S, who offered to find a family for her baby.

Gold Thieves Sniffed Out On Flight To Hong Kong
DUBAI, Nov 11 (Bernama) -- United Arab Emirates (UAE) police have arrested five people in connection with the theft of 25 gold bars worth six million dirhams (around RM5.5 million) which local media say belong to a Malaysian jeweller.

They were apprehended in Hong Kong and put on a flight back to Abu Dhabi where they were arrested on Oct 31, according to The National.
The stolen items were recovered while being shipped to Costa Rica.
Brigadier Khalil Al Mansouri, criminal investigation general department director at Dubai Police, said the suspects had tracked the Malaysian gold trader at the Naif Gold Souk in Dubai.

Burj Dubai's High-altitude Cranes Dismantled As Opening Date Nears
DUBAI, Nov 11 (Bernama) -- Burj Dubai, the world's tallest building, is nearing completion, following the dismantling of the last high-altitude crane used in its construction.
In preparation for its Jan 4, 2010, opening, the Burj Dubai construction team is now concentrating on the interiors and landscaping.
They completed the tower's external cladding recently, according to a statement from Emaar Properties which is developing the mixed-use tower at the centre of the Downtown Burj Dubai mega project.
Three huge tower cranes were used in moving construction materials up to Level 156 of Burj Dubai.
In all, the cranes lifted over 63,300 tonnes of steel reinforcement, and were operational for a total of 45,000 man-hours.
A team of 35 skilled technicians manned the cranes, a critical component of the 11,000-strong workforce devoted to the construction of the skyscraper.
Emaar said the operators of the cranes worked at dizzying heights of more than 700 metres, almost double the height of the Empire State Building.
