  • Sazali Adds Another World Title In Dubai

KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 8 (Bernama) -- National bodybuilder Sazali Samad added another world title to his impressive collection after winning the bantamweight title at the 1st World Bodybuilding and Physique Sports Federation (WBPF) Championships in Dubai, United Arab Emirates which ended Sunday.

Batu Pahat-born Sazali edged four other top contenders -- Alaa Hlail Mohsin (Iraq), Somkhit Sumelhowetchakun (Thailand), Nguyen Van Lam (Vietnam) and Milef Ahmed Alghamdf (Saudia Arabia) for the title.

Sazali had won Mr Universe titles at the world championship in Melaka (2000), Moscow (2004), Ostrava, Czech Republic (2006), all in the bantamweight category and Jeju Island, South Korea (2007) in the lightweight category.

Meanwhile, debutant Buda Anak Ancang from Sri Aman, Sarawak, surprised the Malaysian camp by finishing fourth in a field that included five prominent bodybuilders -- Pongkan Jiraphan (Thailand), Yousif Ahmed Hasan (Iraq), Mohamad Azli Jumat (Brunei Darussalam) and Heydari Mahdi (Iran).

Malaysian Body Building Federation (MBBF) Honorary secretary Lt Com Kamaruzaman Kadir said though Sazali's win was expected, Buda's achievement was unexpected, considering the strong field of contenders and the fact that he was competing for the first time.

"Buda's achievement in the flyweight is a result of several months of hard work," he told Bernama when contacted in Dubai today.

The six-member Malaysian contingent to WBPF Championship which started on Nov 3, was led by MBBF president Datuk Wira Gan Boon Leong.

Besides Sazali and Buda, two other national bodybuilders competed in the championship, Mohd Syarul Azman Mahen Abdullah (lightweight) and Othman Yahya (light heavyweight).
